UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2

UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2 is a UFC event to be held on August 28, 2010 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. This will be the first time an event in the UFC has been held in Massachusetts, and it comes as no surprise that Massachusetts native, Kenny Florian, will be fighting at this event.

The main event will be a rematch between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn. Edgar was a severe underdog in the fight, but won via unanimous decision, 50-45, 49-46 and 48-47, all for Edgar. This was considered a huge upset, and on June 24, 2010, ESPN announced Edgar as a nominee for Best Upset of the year at the 2010 ESPY Awards. Penn claimed to have had a sinus infection during the fight, and says he “hadn’t felt quite right in the octagon.” This is not the first time Penn has had an excuse after a loss. (ie. Penn filed a formal complaint with Nevada State Athletic Commission seeking to prevent St-Pierre from fighting by suspending St-Pierre’s fighter’s license. In addition, Penn requested the suspension of St-Pierre’s cornermen, Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse, a fine of $250,000, and overturning the result of the fight to a no-contest.However, the NSAC has taken no action on the issue.)

The co-main event will be between Randy Couture and James Toney. Couture is perhaps one of the greatest wrestlers in the UFC, and Toney is a knockout king. Toney claims boxing is still the best sport, and he is out to make an example of Couture, to prove his point. Couture knows he has to take Toney to the ground if he wants to have any shot at beating the boxing star.

Also fighting at UFC 118 is Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda. Maia’s only losses have been from Nate Marquardt and Anderson Silva, both within the last year. Miranda’s only loss was his UFC debut against Gerald Harris. Though Miranda has not fought the caliber of fighters that Maia has, this should be an interesting fight.
